Slow-pitch softball is a recreational, social and enjoyable mixed-gender team sport, suitable for adults of all ages and abilities. It’s easy to learn and play and you don’t have to be incredibly fit or have much experience of team sports to get the most out of the game.
Softball is a variant of baseball, played with a larger (though hard) ball on a smaller field, with the ball pitched to the batter slowly underarm instead of quickly overarm like in baseball. This is intentional as slow-pitch softball is a much more engaging and involved game than baseball where lots of batting and fielding, the main skills of the sport, happen every game.
Since the 80's, the Muslim community all over the GTA have been exposed to Major League Baseball with the likes of the Toronto Blue Jays or the Montreal Expos. The sport has always been played as a recreational event amongst friends in various localities or picnics, but slowly, the popularity of the sport has grown to more organized levels. What better way to showcase the skills and competitiveness than a Salaam Cup tournament, bringing all Muslim communities across Ontario - and beyond - together to make Softball one of our past times.
About Salaam Sports
As sport continues to grow in the streets, tennis courts and outdoor & indoor spaces, a need was identified to allow Muslims to be able to showcase the talents and skills they have developed over the years in a competitive environment.
With this in mind, two brothers in the Toronto area developed the idea to bring about all Muslim men and youth across Canada for a major annual tournament to do just that...prove to everyone that team sports are a major athletic endeavor among the Muslim community.
Both Safi Habib and Farhan Baig have been involved with sports since childhood and are the founders of Salaam Sports. Their main objective is to grow the love of an active lifestyle among the Muslim population in Canada -- and even North America -- to encourage team play in their free time.
In the end, it allows each and every participant of our tournaments to meet with other Muslims, see the talent that has been flourishing among them and basically, to have a great experience in playing a sport that has given them the enjoyment and excitement while growing up.
